Abstract:

This study examines the impact of unemployment on health insurance coverage in California. Due to a substantial increase in the unemployment rate, from 5.4% in 2007 to 12.3% in 2009, large drops in employment-based coverage, and stagnant enrollment rates in public programs, the number of people uninsured is expected to increase.

Using California Health Interview Survey 2007 data and administrative data, the regression models were developed to estimate the impact of unemployment on four types of coverage--employment-based, Medi-Cal/SCHIP, non-group private and uninsured all/part year. Using statistical simulation, this model will predict the changes in 2009 insurance status and the number of people uninsured for the nonelderly population (0-64) by assigning individual's working status based on 2009 unemployment rate.
