Abstract:
|
Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a frequent cause of health-care associated infections in acute care hospitals, but can also cause illness in persons outside of hospitals and healthcare facilities. About 12% of clinical SA infections are community-associated but this varies by geographic region and population. To date, no study using spatial analysis regarding SA has estimated the impact of SA infections in terms of clinical and financial outcomes such as length of stay, hospitalization rates and in-hospital mortality. This study examines geographic variation in hospitalization rates for SA infections while controlling for spatial dependence in the data. Parish-level surgical and medical hospitalization rates are calculated using data from LAHIDD (Louisiana Hospital Inpatient Discharge Database) reported to the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals from 2000-07.
