Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies the upper North Bosque watershed in Erath County, Texas as ``impaired' based on nutrient levels in surface waters. The presence of confined animal feeding operations (CAFO's) due to the dairy industry imposes high concentrations of manure effluent runoff which, in turn, may lead to phosphorous levels that exceed regulatory thresholds. These standandards pertain to the total phosphorous level in the soil, however the true interest is in that proportion which is suseptible to runoff. We focus on a spatial analysis utilizing stratified kriging with soil component covariates and land use strata with the aim of attaining a reasonable regulatory threshold for water soluble phosphorous.
