Abstract:

Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a standard and a stable measurement of blood glucose commonly used in clinical practice and trials for diabetes treatments. In this work we propose a mathematical model to describe the concentrations of HbA1c over time in response to a treatment intervention for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The model was developed to capture the mixture of different proportions of glycosylated haemoglobin in the red blood cells before and after the start of the treatment, the former of which degenerate over time and reflect the glucose content prior to the intervention. We have applied the model to the data from a real treatment for type 2 diabetes. The model fits the data well and could be potentially used to predict treatment responses.
