Abstract:

Assessment of futility is an important consideration in ongoing clinical trials. This presentation will provide a general overview of the concept of futility in clinical trials, and statistical methodologies for futility assessment. The conditional power approach will be discussed in detail. An application of the conditional power approach for assessing futility in an on-going phase III clinical trial will be presented. Various thresholds of conditional power will be compared, and their potential impact on the overall power of the study will be evaluated by simulations. The final proposed futility criterion will be summarized and discussed.
