Abstract:

Researchers in field of environmental justice often aim to show that individuals living in low-income communities and communities of color have greater exposure to environmental pollutants. However, the highly inter-correlated nature of air pollutants makes it difficult to examine their combined effects on health-related outcomes and on measures of deprivation. In this presentation, we utilize advanced Bayesian statistical modeling techniques to examine the joint effects of multiple exposures measures of deprivation. The methods developed will utilize recently developed powerful Bayesian dimension-reduction and clustering techniques that will characterize the pollutant patterns. We demonstrate our method using estimates of air pollution concentrations measures of deprivations for census tracts in Los Angeles County, CA.
