Abstract:

The statistical analysis of patient satisfaction data is a vital component of health services research. Counseling patients before surgery requires that clinicians appreciate the effect that various patient characteristics, such as age, gender and procedure type, may have on patients' satisfaction. For this study, 339 subjects completed satisfaction surveys 6 weeks and 1 year after orthognathic surgery. Satisfaction was measured on a 7-point Likert scale for questions regarding aspects of the surgical experience. While multiple linear regression can be used to model an average score of the questions, assumptions of equidistance ordinal categories and variance homogeneity can prove troublesome. After converting the mean score to a proportion of satisfaction, ranging from 0 to 1, a quasi-likelihood analysis was performed, applying link and variance functions appropriate for binary data.
