Abstract:
|
Huygens first coined the term "synchronization" in the 17th century to describe the coupling between dynamic processes. Since then numerous applications of synchronization in biological and engineering systems have been noted. Examples include the phase coupling that exists between the human cardiac and respiratory systems, the biological clock synchronization of day and night rhythm patterns in humans and neuron simulation within the human nervous system. On a much larger network scale, such collective dynamic behavior can lead spontaneously to highly ordered and complex structures. One of the underlying goals of the present research is to examine an array of chaotic networks that should exhibit varying degrees of general synchronization. Quantitative statistical measures are used to assess the degree of synchronization existing among such network subunits.
