Abstract:

Phylogenetics is the estimation of evolutionary relationships between a group of species or members of a population based on genetic data. Phylogenetic tree construction requires the estimation of a large number of discrete and continuous parameters and numerous assumptions about evolution. Biologists now recognize that many evolutionary histories are networks rather than trees, and as a result the study of networks is growing in popularity. Phylogenetic networks use a more general model: useful for robustness, data exploration, and detection of non-treelike evolution. We report work on the application of variable selection methods, particularly LARS, on the construction of phylogenetic networks. To our knowledge, it is the first application of these technologies to phylogenetics.
