Abstract:
|
What habits of mind and mathematical skills are needed to prepare students for elementary statistics courses and math for liberal arts courses? Where do the students learn those skills? Should we have a different developmental math course to prepare students for these courses than to prepare students for precalculus courses?
Austin Community College has addressed these questions by developing a separate course with an Elementary Algebra prerequisite. In this presentation, I will describe the students, our topics and course materials, and some of the challenges and successes.
