Abstract:
|
Randomized experiments are the "gold standard" for conducting research and establishing a causal effect, yet often in practice chance imbalances exist in covariates. If covariate data is available before an experiment is conducted, should we check covariate balance for a proposed randomized treatment assignment? If covariate balance is bad on a particular randomization, are we allowed to throw that randomization out and re-randomize? Here we describe a procedure for implementing re-randomization, and explore the implications for the estimation of the treatment effect.
