Abstract:

A meta-analysis combines the results of several independent studies that address related problems by identifying a common effect size through statistical models. Scientific issues under review often cannot be resolved based on a single study but reasonable conclusions can be reached by integrating the results from several studies. Therefore, it is evident that the application of meta-analysis is prudent. However, the results of similar but independent studies can have substantial heterogeneity; therefore, the use of a random effects model may seem appropriate when performing a meta-analysis. In this paper, a one-way random effects model with some methods of accounting for heterogeneity will be cited and compared. The application to log-odds-ratios of uninsured healthcare coverage and emergency room visits will be discussed using the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 1997-2008.
