Abstract:

There are many studies investigating ethnic, religious heterogeneity and its impact on various social or economic outcomes. In many cases, it has been shown that ethnic fractionalization generates conflicts among people and eventually brings about negative effect on economic development. Previous empirical studies about ethnic fractionalization focus on regression analyses with world-wide cross-sectional data. However, there has been no rigorous work on the ethnic fractionalization and its effect in the United States. I present comprehensive ethnic, religious and linguistic fractionalization index in the United States across different geographical units (state and metropolitan statistical area) using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Also, this data set will contain more than 10 years of time periods for meaningful empirical analysis.
