Abstract:

Beginning in 2008, a question about current health insurance coverage was added to the American Community Survey (ACS), with the first set of estimates released in September 2009. This paper evaluates the quality of the health insurance data with an emphasis on the collection and editing procedures. The paper will present national estimates of coverage and non-coverage by select demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Comparisons of ACS estimates to other national sources of this information show the estimates look reasonable and are consistent with these other surveys. The paper will review differences and similarities between surveys that affect the interpretation of the estimates. Finally, ACS state-level estimates of health insurance coverage will be shown.
