Computing confidence intervals (CI) for percentiles is not straightforward especially when data are from a complex survey and percentiles of interest are < 25% or >75%. One widely used approach for computing percentile CIs (Woodruff method) is procedurally simple, but requires selection of an estimator of the CI of a proportion. Numerous estimators of the CIs of proportions have been proposed for the simple random sample case; some of these have been modified for the complex survey case. How well these estimators perform varies depending on how close to 0.5 the proportion is and on features of the complex survey design. This presentation compares CIS for a wide range of percentiles computed for selected National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey variables using the Woodruff procedure and 6 methods for computing the CIS of proportions.
