Abstract:

The importance of statistical methods used in peer reviewed medical publications renders knowledge of biostatistics relevant to clinician training. Statistics can be intimidating to clinicians. However, only a small number of straightforward concepts are necessary for appraising and interpreting health care research. We suggest a simple priority list of concepts, developed for international use at McMaster sponsored Evidence Based Clinical Practice workshops. The list can be used to guide individuals who teach biostatistical concepts to students and to practicing clinicians for the purposes of increasing biostatistical literacy and of facilitating use of the medical literature to optimize the quality of patient care.
