Abstract:

For aerial line transect surveys we seek to estimate spatio-temporal animal density for data with substantial animal clustering and censoring, along with spatio-temporal covariates affecting detection probabilities and animal presence. We focus on a long-term dataset of bowhead whale surveys in the western Arctic. The scientific need for this modeling is twofold: to obtain a comprehensive migration map and to test for patterns of avoidance of industrial activities. A piecewise homogeneous approach is used, for which estimation is based on generalized additive models and corrected for the decreasing probability of detecting an animal as its distance from the plane increases. The results show large scale spatial features and temporal trends of the migration effectively while also finding a smaller-scale region of localized avoidance potentially attributable to anthropogenic impacts.
