Steve made fundamental contributions to the field of survival analysis. He has developed numerous novel statistical methods for analyzing current status and interval censored data, Inference for survival distributions under complex study designs including completing risks, interrupted hazard and long term treatments. His recent work involved estimating HIV incidence based on combined prevalence testing; the estimation of HIV incidence rates using cross-sectional samples using a battery of diagnostic tests of differing sensitivity; as well as analysis of time to a silent event whose occurrence is monitored with error
