Abstract:
|
How can undergraduate programs and related experiences better address our growing needs for qualified statisticians? A diverse panel will judge five mock college transcripts of new graduates planning to become statisticians. They majored in: (1) traditional mathematics, including one course in mathematical statistics; (2) applied mathematics, with three courses in statistics; (3) industrial statistics; (4) statistical science, including core courses in mathematics and computing; and (5) a subject-matter field (e.g. psychology, economics, biology, engineering), including one statistics course, plus the student took three "advanced" statistics courses as electives. The panelists will discuss and rate each type of training. The scores will then be tallied and displayed, followed by ample time for lively repartee by the session's discussant, the panel members, and the audience.
