Abstract:
|
Advances in one's ability to collect large amounts of data in biology/genetics and elsewhere lead to statistical problems that involve searching an indexed set of observations for signals that are manifested as ``peaks'' against a noisy background. I will describe a number of examples and discuss three common statistical problems: (1) Multiple comparisons in signal detection, (2) Bias in the estimation of signal amplitude, and (3) Model selection.
