Abstract:
|
The emergence of electronic medical records (EMRs) as a replacement for the previous state of the art (!) in medical informatics (writing vital signs down on pieces of paper and putting them in a folder on the hospitalized patient's door) offers significant new opportunities for real-time assessment of patient sickness and the improved triage that can result. An organization at the forefront of the EMR movement is Kaiser Permanente, which will have a completely functional EMR system in all hospitals and clinics by the middle of 2010. With colleagues from Kaiser I've been developing Bayesian dynamic generalized linear models to incorporate information on symptoms, vital signs, laboratory results, and procedures into the process of updating patient sickness scores and issuing alerts to physicians in real time; in this talk I'll describe some of our findings.
