Title: Using Cardiovascular Disease Risk Functions in Public Health and Clinical Trial: The Framingham Study Experience
Author(s): Ralph B. D'Agostino, Sr.*+
Companies: Boston University
Address: Mathematics and Statistics Department, Boston , MA, 02215,
Keywords: The Framingham Study ; biomarkers ; risk factors
Abstract:

The Framingham Study has developed cardiovascular risk functions (usually time to event models) over the years where cardiovascular risk factors are entered into the mathematical model and the risk of developing a cardiovascular disease over a specified time period. The risk estimates are used for risk stratification for deciding upon treatment (e.g., blood pressure, cholesterol). These functions have also been used for risk stratify patients for clinical trials over the years starting with the MRFIT trial to present HIV trials.

These functions have also been used to evaluate developing drug safety issues. They are also well suitable to evaluate confirmatory and exploratory hypotheses related to biomarkers and genetic profiles.

In this talk we will systematically review the various applications list above and discuss their relative merits
