Abstract:
|
Baseball players, managers and coaches, front office staff, announcers, writers, and fans almost unanimously agree that the quality of performance of an MLB relief pitcher declines as his usage in recent games increases. The logic of this adage is straightforward; an increase in usage results in an increase in fatigue/decrease in stamina, which ultimately has a deleterious effect on performance. While this seemingly reasonable adage has become part of accepted baseball wisdom as the role of relief pitching has evolved over the past several decades, it has not been subject to rigorous analytic scrutiny. We systematically consider the questions i) is this adage true? and ii) if this adage is true, what is the nature of the relationship between the quality of performance of an MLB relief pitcher and his usage in recent games?
