Abstract:

A sustained economic recovery seems unlikely until the uncertainty surrounding the solvency of major financial institutions has been resolved. This presentation will focus on the challenges that the U.S. faces in mounting a recovery, including both the budget deficit and the trade deficit. The crisis and large wealth losses may trigger a long-sought rebalancing of the nation's saving and investment. Barry Bosworth is a senior fellow in the Economic Studies program and the Robert V. Roosa Chair in International Economics at the Brookings Institution. His areas of expertise include capital formation, fiscal policy, inflation, social security, and international economics. He was director of the President's Council on Wage and Price Stability in 1977-79 and has had appointments at UC- Berkeley and Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
