Abstract:
|
Coming from a career in business my view of 'making statistics easier to learn' is as a form of product development. This view identifies the student as the customer and statistics as the product. To get to know the customer I used qualitative interviews and survey data. Developed from these efforts is a profile of how the successful student navigates through undergraduate statistics. To get to know the product I observed sections of statistics, interviewed instructors, reviewed textbooks, and performed a literature review on over 650 articles representing many diverse journals. The findings from this area are anchored in the experimentally designed studies found in the literature. A sample of the findings are that deep learning is more prevalent when students are allowed to understand the concepts in their own way and when emphasis is removed from finding final answers.
