Abstract:

This data security system transfers data between notebook computers, in use during a nationwide CAPI survey, and the central office location at ICF Macro in Calverton, Maryland. The data collection software, CSPro, stores data locally in ASCII format, so a secure means of transmitting those data was needed. Due to the format of the data files, the transfer method could not depend upon synchronization techniques such as those available with database management software. The technology of choice was secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) in conjunction with applications written with Microsoft Visual Basic and Access. This study, the National Survey of WIC Participants (NSWP), is funded by the Food and Nutrition Service of the US Department of Agriculture as part of its Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.
