Abstract:

Second solid tumors are a leading cause of mortality among long-term cancer survivors, and the development of second cancers is in part a serious side effect of treatment with radiation and chemotherapy. Stomach cancer is the fourth most common malignancy worldwide, but little is known about the risk of second stomach cancer. In cohorts of 10-year survivors of either Hodgkin lymphoma or testicular cancer, we used multivariate analyses to evaluate relative risks (RR) of incident stomach cancer by categories of time since first cancer diagnosis, age at first cancer diagnosis, attained age, gender, and initial treatment. Risks of stomach cancer were significantly elevated for both Hodgkin lymphoma (RR=8.0) and testicular cancer (RR=5.2) survivors compared to the general population. Patterns of risk were similar for the two first cancers, and the relative risk declined sharply with age.
