Abstract:

Samples of benthic macroinvertebrate communities provide important information about the quality of streams. Because macroinvertebrate structure in streams is difficult to interpret by evaluating individual taxons, information on the taxa is combined into single multimetric to describe the status of the stream. A new multi-metric benthic index, based on selecting and combining metrics that summarize the benthic community, is developed for use in national parks in the eastern region of the United States. Metrics were selected based on ecological and environmental information as well as statistical properties of the metric. Metrics were eliminated that were redundant with other metrics. After selection, the ten best metrics were standardized and the probability associated with the value of a metric was used as a measure of the risk of stream impairment.
