Keywords: biosurveillance ; syndromic ; surveillance ; public health
Abstract:

Biosurveillance is accomplished through near real-time data and information gathering with appropriate analysis, interpretation, validation, and sharing of information related to exposures, disease threats, and events. Monitoring of signs and symptoms, rather than laboratory-confirmed cases, has been generally referred to as "syndromic surveillance" and is designed to provide an earlier indication of an emerging population health threat event. Such indicators however are embedded within substantial background noise. The data, analytic challenges and policies associated with syndromic surveillance in the context of biosurveillance are formidable in complexity. This roundtable session will provide a background and policy context to initiate a discussion of these complexities, issues and approaches to addressing them, as well as a discussion of how this practice is evolving.
