Abstract:

This paper develops a statistical matching model to estimate the effect of synergy between partners on the performance of the partnership. More specifically, our model allows us to separate the effect of synergy from the effects of the quality of the individual partners making up the partnership. Measuring synergy in partnerships is important as it is often observed that some individuals are productive no matter whom they work with, while others seem to work well only with specific partners. This model is applied to data from the German premier football league for the years 1971--2001. Treating the coach and the football team as a partnership, initial estimates of synergy indicate that a good coach-team match improves team performance by only 5%. We speculate that the relatively low gain to coach-team matches is related to high turnover among coaches.
