Abstract:
|
Despite widespread concern about the "nonmedical use" or "misuse" of prescription psychotropic drugs, there is no universally accepted definition of the construct and no single way to measure it. Among major epidemiologic surveys, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) defines nonmedical use as use without a prescription of one's own or simply for the feeling or experience the drug causes. This presentation will outline issues with the definition and operationalization of the construct, collection of data for specific medications versus aggregate categories, balancing continuity of drug questions for trend analysis against the need to adapt questions as new drugs emerge and old drugs become obsolete, and related issues. It will discuss our ongoing methodological work on these issues supporting the redesign of NSDUH.
