Abstract:

Many passengers on commercial airlines experience delays and cancellations which they then begin to associate with airports---be it point of origin or destination---without regard to the appropriateness of their conclusions. Additionally, everyone can recall drastic interruptions to the flow of air traffic, be it September 11, 2001, or a particularly harsh snow storm, but may not be able to distinguish lesser obstructions; thus in this submission we wish to examine the flow of air traffic in the United States with two goals in mind. First we wish to construct a graphical summary of the flow of air traffic in the United States incorporating the volume of flights, and cancellations and delays. Secondly, we wish to develop a method of identifying abnormal flow, potentially being able to do so as a situation develops.
