Abstract:

We review a handful of classic network visualizations with an eye toward identifying the most effective ways to communicate diffusion-relevant information. The key issues relevant for diffusion turn on accurate structural representations of social distance and path redundancy. Crucially, however, in any setting where network ties are episodic, some element of edge timing must be introduced. We conclude by introducing a new path-linked representation of dynamic networks that allows one to capture dynamics clearly, though at some sacrifice of the spatial structuring of the network.
