Abstract:

The Gertrude Cox scholarship was established in 1989 to encourage more women to enter the statistical profession. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the scholarship, this presentation will provide an overview of the scholarship. I will first provide background information on the status of women in the statistics profession at that time, the motivation for establishing the scholarship, and the process for getting it established. I will then describe how the scholarship has evolved over the years and the impact it has had on the advancement of women in statistics. Finally I will look ahead to the future and explain why the scholarship continues to be relevant for the encouragement, motivation, and recognition of a new generation of female statisticians.
