Abstract:

Swift-3D is a software system for carrier-scale network visualization. After reaching our initial goal of visually exploring a full day (hundreds of millions) of voice call attempts, we developed a series of applications in data networking and managed services. Most applications integrate feeds of physical and logical assets, times series of statistics and events, and mapping of customers to assets. Displays include network diagrams, geographic maps, charts and tables. The work culminated in an online system that monitors over 47,000 AT&T assets (servers, routers, firewalls, or WiFi access points). As even a single system can have dozens of statistical attributes to be monitored, we recently collaborated with Tamara Munzner and Peter McLachlan on a novel method of visualizing large sets of times series. We will survey the design of Swift-3D and LiveRAC and some practical experiences.
