Abstract:

Climate change will have both positive and negative impacts on public health by changing the distribution of various factors that cause mortality and morbidity. Quantifying the health impact of climate change will be critical for determining potential responses and mitigation strategies. One major consequence of climate change will be the increase in the frequency and magnitude of heat waves. The effects of heat on mortality and morbidity vary across time and across populations in a manner that is only partially understood, making it difficult to extrapolate results from studies in specific locations to other regions. We present a national analysis of the short-term health effects of heat waves in the United States and highlight regional differences in these effects.
