Abstract:
|
Everywhere in academia, government and industry some statisticians hold important leadership positions. But are enough of us in such positions? A presence at the highest decisionmaking levels can help to foster a better understanding and appreciation of our discipline, create even more positions for statisticians, attract more students, and attract more funding for research in statistics. The panel and floor discussion will address questions such as how involved are we in decision making at the highest levels? What challenges do we face in playing a more prominent role? Are there areas where we are particularly underrepresented? Where can we get more involved right away? Can we provide our students with experiences to better prepare them for more prominent leadership roles? What are some success stories? Can we learn from these? What is the role of statistical societies?
