Abstract:

Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) is a collection of information systems, communications networks, and Intelligent Transportation Systems that support commercial vehicle operations. CVISN includes information systems owned and operated by state agencies and the Federal government, private motor carriers, and other stakeholders. Two focuses of CVISN are: 1) The storing and sharing of safety information; and 2)Roadside electronic screening. A statistical analysis was conducted to measure the effects of these technologies on the safety of trucks and the general traveling public, through improved roadside enforcement. A probability model was developed to predict the number of large truck crashes, injuries, and fatalities that could be avoided under different simulated roadside enforcement scenarios that make use of various CVISN technologies.
