Abstract:

The Defense and National Security communities depend heavily on two important aspects of statistics: data and analysis/reliability testing. Yet too often decisionmakers find themselves awash in data/statistics but find out too late that they do not have actionable information and/or statistical tools have not been correctly applied/better techniques exist. Statisticians are working to overcome these shortcomings by implementing the ASA's 2006 Task Force on Defense and Security, pursing new approaches by ASA's Section on Statistics in Defense and National Security, and responding to outreach by defense and national security professionals. This paper describes initiatives/examples where improvements resulted from involvement of statistics/statisticians, including a simple technique for cleaning up data, use of data mining, and reliability testing for an air to surface standoff missile.
