Abstract:

Ramsay and Silverman (1997) proposed functional linear models (FLM) where the functional data can be (i) the dependent variable, (ii) independent variable, or (iii) both. We cast these FLMs in the framework of general smoothing spline ANOVA decomposition. Using the Canadian weather data and R functions in the ASSIST package, we illustrate alternative approaches to fit and make inference. If time permits, we will introduce semi-parametric nonlinear mixed effects models and illustrate how to use them to register curves.
