Title: Higher Criticism Statistic: Theory and Applications in Cosmology and Astronomy

Abstract:

The Higher Criticism is a recent statistic proposed by Donoho and Jin (2004), where it was shown to be effective in resolving a subtle testing problem: testing whether n normal means are all 0 versus the alternative that a small fraction is nonzero. In this talk, we will discuss the applications of Higher Criticism to two nonGaussian detection problems in cosmology and astronomy: detecting a faint convolution component of cosmic string in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and the nonGaussian signature detection in the CMB using the recent WMAP first-year data presented by NASA 2003. We show Higher Criticism is useful for both, that it has competitive powers for detection, and that it offers an automatic way to identify the tiny data portion of nonGaussianity. This talk includes joint work with Nabila Aghanim, Laura Cayon, David Donoho, Olivier Forni, and Jeau-Luc Starck.
