Title: Use of "Extremes" in Identifying GIS-based Bivariate Associations

Abstract:

A nonparametric approach to bivariate association analysis is presented for application to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Extreme values from each end of the bivariate distribution are used to categorize observations into "bins," which form the basis for a 3X3 contingency table. Values in the four corner "bins" isolate those geographical locations of High-High and Low-Low (congruent) and High-Low and Low-High (noncongruent) characteristics on the two variables. These locations may be mapped for visual inspection and more detailed analysis using other correlates. An example of this approach using cancer mortality data will be illustrated.
