Title: Statistical Visualization for Trees and Forests

Abstract:

Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and their descendants have great ability to produce powerfully accurate predictions, often incorporating many variables, but the resulting models are frequently opaque and challenging to interpret. This is even more so for ensemble methods, often called "forests," incorporating dozens or hundreds of trees. Clever use of statistical graphics and visualization can reveal at least some of the structure of these models, aiding greatly in interpretability. We will discuss various approaches to visualizing these models and some of the software available. We also will discuss mode trees, mode forests, and related graphical methods for investigating features in nonparametric density estimates and regression curves. Participants are encouraged to bring additional applications and examples from their own experiences.
