Abstract:

We present a case study of a designed experiment involving spatial patterns of neuronal activation in response to psychotropic drug treatments. The activation of each neuron is driven by several stochastic mechanisms, including regional targetting by a drug, subject susceptibility to treatment, and interaction with other neurons. To compare activation for different drugs across distinct brain regions, we develop a general hierarchical model for analyzing salient features of the underlying point process. Embedded in this model, we explore several strategies for for modelling a single point pattern, beginning with simple Poisson counting, and ending with intensity kriging, a method we've recently devised for smoothly predicting the underlying intensity using a loglinear mixed mixed model formulation.
