Abstract:

This lecture will provide an overview of current issues in educational testing with special attention to those topics likely to be of interest to statisticians. As education, and particularly accountability in education, becomes more politicized, testing has assumed a more prominent role. Inevitably, politicians and the public place demands on the assessment process and an inferential burden on the test results that is greater than they can bear.

I will describe how advances in science and technology are helping the testing profession to better meet these demands. Examples include the development of sophisticated expert systems that can generate items or analyze and evaluate complex student productions. Developments in statistics and allied fields make possible real time diagnostic assessment and comprehensive intelligent tutoring systems. The lecture will conclude with some speculations about the near future.
