Abstract:

The Michaelis-Menton equation is often used to model enzyme kinetics. It is a non-linear differential equation that relates reaction rate to substrate concention. Most statistical research has focused on studies where the reaction rate is measured directly. In plant nutrient uptake studies, the reaction rate is not measured directly. Instead, the substate (i.e., nutrient) concentration is measured over time. I develop an integrated Michaelis-Menton model to estimate enzyme kinetic parameters from longitudinal data. It is possible to incorporate random effects, although the computation is difficult. These methods are used to estimate the effects of root zone temperature on the kinetics of nitrate uptake in red maples.
