Abstract:
|
The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) collects data on healthcare utilization, expenditures, sources of payment, insurance coverage, and healthcare quality measures. The survey was designed to produce national and regional estimates for the U.S. civilian non-institutionalized population. Geographic comparisons of these data are typically made for Census Regions, as well as for Metropolitan/non-Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Comparisons across these broadly defined groupings may mask important distinguishing characteristics between rural and urban settings, which may be affecting the delivery and quality of healthcare services for certain subpopulations. Information found on the Area Resource File (ARF) will be linked to the MEPS data to enable more specific classifications of geographic areas across a rural/urban continuum. Estimates of healthcare measures will be generated and disparities evaluated. The paper will focus on whether the data offer sufficient sample size to produce reliable estimates for analyses across variously defined geographic regions. This work will improve upon the methods being used to generate national healthcare disparity and quality reports.
