Abstract:

A simple method is given for designing Phase I Shewhart charts for variables. The design method assumes m independent random samples each of size n have been taken periodically from the output of the process. The control limits for these charts will be determined using Bonferroni's inequality and either exact or approximate distributional results derived under the normal model. A simulation study is presented to assess the accuracy of the design procedure.
