Abstract:

When well-done, a series of case studies offers a high level of qualitative evidence for use in gaining greater knowledge of a subject. It may also play a (weaker but still important) role in quantitative analyses. In what sense this is possible will be the topic of discussion. To be provocative, more can sometimes be learned from a series of good case studies that form an average quantitative study. Joint use of both approaches may be best of all.
