Abstract:

Historically, several authors have used the mode of a nonparametric density estimator as an estimate of the true underlying mode of a density. The ridge on the density surface is a one-dimensional analog to the mode. In fact, we define k-ridges as k-dimensional maximal features on a multivariate density surface. These k-ridges are estimators of maximal manifolds of the underlying density. We give some algorithms for computing ridges and their supports and show some visualizations of the ridges.
